The CLA Coaching Blueprint

Understand how players learn. Coach with greater confidence.

A comprehensive online course that helps you develop a deeper understanding of the Constraints-Led Approach and use its principles to confidently design and adapt practice for the players in front of you.

Knowing the ideas is only the beginning

When I first discovered the Constraints-Led Approach, I didn't have a clear path to follow. There were books, research papers, podcasts, courses and countless ideas being shared online. I could pick up individual concepts and try them in my coaching, but understanding how everything connected was much more difficult. And I think that's one of the biggest challenges with learning about the CLA.You might understand what a constraint is. You might already be changing rules, spaces or equipment in your practices. You might be familiar with ideas like representative learning design, affordances or self-organisation.But knowing the individual ideas and understanding how they fit together to guide your coaching are two different things. It's easy to keep searching for another activity, another constraint manipulation or another idea to try. But more information doesn't necessarily make it easier to decide what the players in front of you actually need. The goal isn't simply to know more about the CLA. It's to develop an understanding you can actually coach from

A stronger foundation changes how you coach

Understanding the principles behind the CLA started to give me something much more useful than another activity to try. It gave me something to come back to when coaching got messy. Because coaching is messy.Players respond differently to the same task. An activity that works brilliantly with one group might not work with another. Sometimes the constraint you manipulate has a completely different effect to the one you expected.Understanding the principles doesn't give you the perfect answer for every situation. It gives you a stronger foundation for deciding what to do next. You can start to understand why making a task more representative matters, manipulate constraints with greater purpose and think more deeply about what the players in front of you actually need. That's where I think a lot of the confidence comes from. Not knowing exactly what to do in every situation, but developing enough understanding to observe what's happening, adapt your approach and make better decisions about what to do next.

A clearer path through the CLA

When I first started using constraints in my coaching, I didn't really understand the approach behind them.I was coaching with constraints, but I wasn't really using a Constraints-Led Approach. That changed gradually as my understanding developed. I began to understand not just what I could change in practice, but why I might change it and how those decisions could support learning. That's when my coaching really started to evolve. But getting to that point took me a long time. There were plenty of occasions where I wasn't sure whether I was applying the ideas effectively or what I should do next. The CLA Coaching Blueprint is the course I wish I'd had at that stage of my journey.I've brought the key ideas and principles underpinning the CLA together into one clear learning journey, with the theory explained in coach-friendly language and continually connected back to what it means for you in practice. The aim is to help you understand the principles well enough that you can make your own decisions, adapt to the players in front of you and become more confident designing environments where learning can happen.

Wherever you're starting from with the CLA, the Blueprint is designed to help you build on your current understanding. And it isn't specific to one sport or level of performance. The principles underpinning the CLA stay the same, but how they come to life will look different depending on the sport, the environment and the players in front of us.That's why you'll see examples from different sports throughout the Blueprint. Exploring how the same principles show up in different environments can give us fresh perspectives on familiar coaching problems and help us think about how those ideas might apply in our own context.Different sports. Different players. Different problems. The same principles to help us make sense of them.

The aim isn't simply to know more about the CLA. It's to help you become more intentional in the decisions you make as a coach. As your understanding develops, you can move beyond searching for the “right” activity or relying on what has worked for someone else. Instead, you become clearer about what you're trying to help players learn, more purposeful in how you design practice, and more confident adapting based on what you see. It's about developing the understanding to think for yourself, design with purpose and respond to the players in front of you.

More than a library of activities

There are plenty of activities, games and constraint manipulations you can find online and take straight into your next session. Some of them might work brilliantly. But what works with one group might have a completely different effect with another. The players are different, the environment is different and the problems they're trying to solve are different. That's why the CLA Coaching Blueprint isn't built around giving you more activities to collect. It's built around helping you understand the principles behind the practice. You'll see plenty of practical examples throughout the Blueprint, but they're there to help you explore why a coach might design something in a particular way, what it encourages players to do and what we can learn from how they respond. The aim isn't to leave with a bigger library of activities. It's to understand the thinking behind them.

Your journey through the Blueprint

3 Modules • 18 Sections • 120+ Short LessonsThe CLA can feel like a collection of separate ideas when you first start exploring it. The Blueprint has been structured to help those ideas gradually connect, with each stage building on what you've learned before. And throughout each stage, you'll have opportunities to bring the ideas back to your own coaching through practical examples, reflections and tasks.1)Build your foundations: Start by developing a clear understanding of the Constraints-Led Approach and the key ideas that underpin it. You'll explore what constraints actually are, how they interact to shape behaviour and how we can begin to manipulate them with greater purpose. The goal: Understand the approach you're trying to apply, rather than simply using constraints in your coaching.2)Understand how skill develops: Go deeper into what learning actually looks like and the ideas that sit underneath the CLA. You'll explore how players coordinate movement, learn to perceive opportunities for action, and why variability, exploration and problem solving matter for learning. The goal: Develop an understanding of learning that can start to guide the decisions you make as a coach.3)Design for learning: Bring that understanding together to become more purposeful in how you design practice. You'll explore how to design representative learning environments, simplify tasks without losing what matters, manipulate constraints with greater purpose, and observe and adapt based on what happens in front of you.The goal: Become more purposeful in how you design, adapt and reflect on practice. Each stage builds on the last, taking you from understanding the foundations of the CLA to applying those principles with greater purpose in your own coaching.

FAQ'S

If you're particularly busy, follow the Busy Coach pathway to focus on the key lessons first. You can always come back and explore the rest in more depth later.
- What if I'm completely new to the CLA?: That's absolutely fine. The Blueprint starts with the foundations and gradually builds your understanding from there. If you'd like to get a feel for the ideas first, you can start with my free CLA Crash Course (link at bottom of page), followed by the first section of the Blueprint for free. Together, they'll give you a strong introduction to the approach before deciding whether you'd like to go deeper.
- What if I'm already familiar with the CLA?: The Blueprint isn't only for coaches starting from scratch. If you're already familiar with the ideas, you can use the course to make stronger connections between them, deepen your understanding and reflect on how you're applying the principles in your own coaching.
- Is it mostly theory?: No. There's enough theory to help you understand why you're doing what you're doing, but the focus continually comes back to coaching. You'll work through practical examples, coaching scenarios and tasks, alongside frameworks like GUIDE and PRESS to help you apply the ideas in your own context.
- Will it be relevant to my sport? Yes. The examples throughout the Blueprint come from different sports deliberately. Seeing how the same principles can be applied in different contexts can give you new ideas and different ways of thinking about your own coaching. The goal is to understand the principles behind activities, then adapt those ideas to your own sport, players and context.
- What if I have questions along the way? Ask me. You can leave questions as you work through the Blueprint and I'll personally respond, through text or a recorded answer where useful. You'll also have the monthly live Q&As to ask questions, explore ideas from the course and discuss some of the challenges you're experiencing in your own coaching.
